BABEL HOUSE, MAYFAIR
Get transported to the Black Sea, in the heart of Mayfair.
We supplied an incredible array of artwork & mirrors to this Odessa inspired restaurant.
artwork
We sourced, printed, framed & installed over 150 individual artwork, including antique photographs, hand drawn caricatures and antique canvases.
A huge amount of work went into researching the town of Odessa and exploring potential narratives for the artwork to follow. This included negotiating the copyright to utilise stills from a 1920's B&W Soviet movie - Benya Krik, which was set in Odessa.
mirrors
We supplied a range of bespoke mirrors for this project including;
Completely unique art deco inspired, 'stepped' , hand-antiqued mirrors with a faux mercury sparkle. Custom made for this project - a Sterling Art creation.
A selection of traditionally framed mirrors of varying sizes, framed in beautiful, high end, hand finished Italian frames.
Three very large, genuine brass, antique framed mirrors which adorn a wall in the main dining area.
Shaped bronze framed mirrors in the WC's - curved wooden frames were made using CNC. These frames were then hand finished with a bronze liquid metal and finally polished to a gorgeous metallic finish.
murals
We organised, facilitated & completed two fantastic murals for this project;
One was an art deco, Odessa inspired mural with graffiti influences that guides you up the marble staircase.
The other, a stunning full room mural in the upstairs Bar/Lounge featuring a dreamy interpretation of the Odessa coastline.
Other
Keeping with the Odessa theme; we edited a photograph of the Statue of the Duc de Richelieu, utilising sepia tones and giving the image strong, defined 'backlit' properties. The artwork was then printed onto lightly frosted acrylic to ensure an all over translucency.
We managed the careful removal of the mottled glass that was previously installed in these sliding doors, replacing it with our new translucent acrylic panels.
The end result is an eye catching nod to Odessa that serves both aesthetic & functional purposes; light flows seamlessly from the vast skylight in the Private Dining Room into the rest of the upstairs restaurant and the previously bland doors have now become a work of art that transports you to the Black Sea.
